Alice Springs Family Support Service

We exist to show the love of God through the administration of Emergency Relief. The approach embraces the whole person, encompassing the physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions of a person's life. The aim is to empower people to become independent of institutional welfare support.

The Family Support Services is very much a ministry of the Church.  Staff and volunteers not only provide material aid, they minister to the people as needed.  Some of the families that come for support have no other family or friends they can call upon.  People are not judged or discriminated against.  Everyone that comes feels that they are important for being just whom they are.

A high percentage of clients are Aboriginal (55%).  A number of these clients are connected with our Sunday Evening Aboriginal congregation.  Personal relationships have been developed and the Family Support Services provides an ongoing support during the week.

SALVATION ARMY

Drop In Centre - Alice Springs

Supporting Aboriginal Artists

Support aboriginal artists - purchase a painting from The Salvation Army "Drop-in Centre" in Alice Springs.

Painting, mainly in the traditional style, is an important part of our Aboriginal Program’s effort to support our local Aborigines. They come and paint at our Drop in Centre, or they paint at home. We buy many of these paintings from them.

The purpose of this is to give these people a measure of independence. In using their creative talents in this way, they also get satisfaction and higher self esteem.

For some of them, being able to paint at the drop-in centre means that they can work in a safe, unthreatening environment. A cuppa and a sandwich is also available most of the time and there might be a video playing in the background, adding to the good work atmosphere we try to create.

Some of the artists live in town, some out bush. Most of them paint in the traditional style, and they use mainly traditional themes, like gathering bushfood, dreamings, etc.

The proceeds from the paintings go back to the artists, with a small portion set aside to help run The Salvation Army Aboriginal Programme
