when the Lord speaks, it would surely come to reality. I received Christ, knowing the truth and the truth have set me free. Having known the truth, I had no choice than to do what is lawful and right in the sight of God for enternal life and in the sight of man for witness of God's mercy and glory upon my life. I have the pleasure to share my testimony with you,
I am Mr Frank Chika, the legal the Property Manager to late Mrs. A. Michael. A Foreign Woman that lived in my Country Nigeria for 21 years before they died in the Belleview plane crash. October 2005. This Lady was a good Christian, she so Dedicated to God but she lost her husband so early and she had no child till she died. Throughout her stayed in my country, she acquired a lot of properties like Lands, house properties, etc. As her legal adviser, before she death, she Instructed me to write her WILL. Because she had no child, she dedicated her wealth to God. According to the WILL, the properties have to be sold and the money will be given out to a Foreign ministry for the work of God, Orphanages and less privileges ones. As Their legal adviser, all the documents for the Properties were in my care.
She gave me the authority to sell the properties and give out the fund to a Foreign Ministries for the work of God. In short, I sold all the properties after she death, as she instructed and as matter of fact, after I sold all her properties, I realized more than $13,000,000.00 (Thirtheen million US dollars plus), and what supposed to be the percentage interest of my right legal fee was firstly deducted by me out of the total amount realized from the sold properties, this was base on the initial agreement between me and the owner of the properties before she death. Therefore the total amount left to be invested into God's work as instructed by the owner is $13,000,000.00 (Thirtheen million US dollars) only. But Instead of giving the main fund out for the work of God as instructed to me by the owner before she death. I converted the fund to myself with the intention of investing the fund abroad for my personal use. I was afraid of putting the fund in the Bank, because I have to give account to the bank on how I got the money. I then packaged the fund in consignments and deposited the consignments with a security company. I did not want the management of the Security Company to know the content of the consignments; therefore I registered the content of the consignments as Gold Bars. Now, the security company believes that what I deposited with them was Gold Bars.
I had encounter with Christ when Rev. Billy Graham was preaching on television concerning Amanas and Sapphire in Acts 5:1-11. After hearing the word of God, I gave my life to Christ and became a born again Christian. As a born again Christian, I started reading my bible and one day, the Lord opened my eyes to Ezekiel 33: 18 and 19 where the word of God says: "When the righteous truth from his righteousness, and committed iniquity, he shall even die thereby. But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby". From the scripture, I discovered that the only way I could have peace in my life is to do what is lawful and right by
Giving out the fund as instructed for the work of God by the owner before her death. I have asked God for forgiveness and I know that God have forgiven me. But I have to do what is lawful and right in the sight of God by giving out the fund to the chosen ministry for the purpose of God's work as instructed by the owner before her death. After my fasting and prayers, I asked God to make his choice and direct me to a honest Christian but after my fervent prayer over it, then you were nominated to me through divine revelation from God, so these are how I received such a divine revelation from the Lord, how I got your contact information, and I then decided to contact you for the fund to be used wisely for things that will glorify the name of God.
I have notified the Security Company where I deposited the consignments that contained the fund that I am moving the consignment abroad and the security company has since been waiting for my authority for the consignment to leave my country and move to abroad. You should also forward to me your telephone and fax number for easy communication and to fax you the documents concerning the consignments. Prompt response will be highly appreciated. You can contact me on my secured e-mail address : removed

I recently received an email that contained a really good message on supporting the troops in Iraq. It showed how they sacrifice for our way of living and compared it with what we take for granted every day of our lives. I thought that the email was very good and don't object to it as such. It gets a great point across. However as with so many emails these days, there was a little bit tacked onto the end to which I object and would suggest everyone consider deleting or vetting before they forward such emails to friends.
What I object to is the last little bit tacked on the end which infers a blessing it can't offer, a curse if you don't follow its direction, and, when it comes down to it, someone will probably call you anyway. Send to 13 people with a time limit also reinforces a subliminal curse. At best its a useless remark and at worst it borders on witchcraft, harassment and the occult and gullible people might freak and pass it on out of fear. That's wrong and I'd rather remove the offending bits before passing it on. What do you think? Too many of the emails we so freely send have remarks like this attached. Lets think about them before passing them on. Anyway that's my point of view. Please consider. Steve. (Top)

Harry Potter and the Case of a Trojan Virus DUBAI Cyber criminals are using Harry Potter to access financial details of unwitting people, by tricking children into downloading spyware on their home PCs during the summer holidays, according to a new report. During the holidays, youngsters spend more time on the family PC, chatting with friends, downloading music or watching videos, the survey said. And hackers are using sites popular with teenagers to steal their parents’ financial information and account details. One scam to watch out for is the ‘Harry Potter Is Dead’ variety. Online criminals have been spreading this rumour alongside a malicious programme designed to compromise infected PC’s. It is not the first Harry Potter-related scam fans encountered recently – just a couple of weeks back an e-mail promising free premiere tickets for the upcoming Potter movie was discovered. It also carried a Trojan virus. Samir Kirouani, online security expert from Trend Micro Incorporated, said: "Parents need to be aware that giving their children access to the home PC may open it up to spyware, spam and other web threats, leaving their personal or financial information up for grabs." A ComScore study last month revealed social networking sites hold a particular appeal to the 15 to 24 age group. A Nielsen study published the same month said Bebo was most popular with children and teenagers – a third of its users are less than 18 years old. The top three favourite sites among children and teens, according to Nielsen: - Bebo: 32 per cent visitors under 18
- MySpace: 14 per cent visitors under 18
- Facebook: 5 per cent visitors under 18
Security Tips For Parents - Place the computer in the family room, kitchen or living room, not in your children’s bedroom
- Get to know their ‘online’ friends just as you get to know all of their regular friends
- Check your children’s profiles, blogs and social networking posts
- Warn them that people may not be what they seem to be and that people they chat with are not their friends, they are just people they chat with
- Teach them never to meet an online friend in person unless you are with them

Leptospirosis Subject: FW: Toxic cans!!!! Please Read!!! Subject: FW: Use A Straw!!! Please Read!! VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
This incident happened recently in North Texas. We need to be even more careful everywhere. A woman went boating one Sunday, taking with her some cans of coke which she put in the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken into Intensive Care Unit and on Wednesday she died. The autopsy revealed a certain Leptospirose caused by the can of coke from which she had drunk, not using a glass. A test showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis. Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to wash thoroughly the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them as they have been stocked in warehouse and transported straight to The shops without being cleaned. A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets i.e. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.
Please forward this message to all the people you care about. Commentary:The Leptospirosis Information Center dismisses this emailed warning as fake.
Exposure to urine from infected rats and other animals can indeed cause humans to contract leptospirosis. However, the chances of someone becoming infected in the manner described in this email are extremely slim. According to the LIC, "You are more at risk of being hit by lightning while riding a camel than contracting leptospirosis from a drinks container."
The LIC article also states that: Leptospira require constant immersion in water to survive, and so drying of the surface for any length of time would permanently kill the bacteria. Given that drinking containers are non-porous, surface moisture dries very quickly and cannot possibly contaminate the contents. The organisms that cause Leptospirosis can survive outside the body of the original host, but only if favourable environmental condition are present. An article on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website notes that: The bacteria prefer moist, slightly alkaline soil, stagnant ponds, and low-flow, slow-moving, slightly alkaline streams. In these conditions the organism can survive for several weeks. Given these facts, it is highly improbable that Leptospirosis bacteria could have survived on the surface of the can lids long enough to infect the alleged victim Source: http://www.hoax-slayer.com (Top)
GIFTS, LEGACY, BEQUESTS & ESTATES There are a lot of fraud emails around stating that you have been selected to receive a large amount of money through all sorts of inventive means but mostly because someone has died and you are selected as a Christian or as someone who can act as a beneficiary. ALL FRAUD. The problem is that so many people still want the instant wealth and are manipulated into parting with substantial amounts for fees, searches and costs associated with non existent funds. Example: Attn; Sir Greetings in the name of our lord Jesus Christ, I am the former Mrs. Monica Peter, a widow to late Musa Peter, I am 47 years old, I am now a new Christian convert, suffering from long time cancer of the breast. From all indications my condition is really deteriorating and it is quite obvious that I won’t live more than six months according to my doctors. This is because the cancer stage has gotten to a very bad stage. My late husband was killed during the U.S raid against terrorism in Afghanistan, and during the period of our marriage we could not produce any child. My late husband was very wealthy and after his death, I inherited all his businesses and wealth. The doctor has advised me that I may not live for more than six months, so I now decided to divide part of this wealth, to distribute to the development of the church in Africa, America, Asia and Europe. I selected you after visiting the website. And I prayed over it. I am willing! To donate the sum of $1.8 million U.S dollars to you for the less privilege. Please I want you to note that this fund is lying in Escrow account and upon my instruction, my attorney, who presently is in Africa distributing relief materials to victims of bomb blast in (Abidjan), will file in an application for the transfer of the money in your name. Lastly, I honestly pray that this money when transferred will be used for the said purpose, because I have come to find out that wealth acquisition without Christ is vanity upon vanity. May the grace of our lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you and your family? I await your urgent reply. Yours in Christ, Mrs.Monica Peter. Do not reply but treat as fraud and block sender. (Top)
I WILL KILL MYSELF WITH THIS PREGENANT IM TIRED OF THIS WICKED WORLD, I WILL KILL MYSELF. NO BODY CARE FOR ME, IM WEAK, TIRED AND FRAUDSTRATED. YOU CHRISTIANS DONT DO WHAT YOU PREACH. PRAY FOR MY SOUL, I WILL NOT LIVE AGAIN. THIS PROBLEM IS MUCH FOR ME. MISS ROSE I cannot find out much on this email but have received it numerous times over a few months. The fact that the list of emails it was sent to read like a list gleaned from Christian link pages makes me very suspicious. Probably out to solicit finances and playing on our Christian beliefs. Spelling and punctuation doesn't help. Can anyone enlighten me further? Steve. (Top)
IN MEMORIAM EMAIL HOAX A hoax email is doing the rounds titled "IN MEMORIAM" It states - "This week the UK removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offended' the Muslim population which claims it never occurred."
Do not forward it on - go the other way, pass this info back to the person who sent you the email.
This is just another example of how we must challenge everything we are sent or that we read these days - BEFORE WE ACT ON IT!!!
Full details of this can be found at http://www.hoax-slayer.com/uk-holocaust-removal.shtml Extract Commentary: This email forward claims that teachings about the Holocaust have been removed from the United Kingdom (UK) school curriculum because their inclusion may offend Muslim citizens. However, this claim is unfounded. The UK government has not banned the teaching of the Holocaust in schools, nor is it planning to do so. In fact, according to the BBC, "in England, teaching children about the Holocaust is compulsory". While other UK countries such as Scotland and Wales have their own school curriculum and Holocaust teaching is not compulsory, it is certainly not banned and is generally encouraged. Be alert, not alarmed. Source: Salt Shakers (Top)

Phishing Guide
What is Phishing? Phishing is a form of fraud designed to steal your identity. It works by using false pretenses to get you to disclose sensitive personal information, such as credit and debit card numbers, account passwords, or Social Security numbers. One of the most common phishing scams involves sending a fraudulent email that claims to be from a well-known company. Phishing can also be carried out in person, over the phone, through fraudulent pop-up windows, and websites. DEFINITIONS Phishing (pronounced “fishing”): Fraudulent emails that request or initiate a scam to get sensitive personal information. Spoof Site: Fraudulent sites – usually linked from a phishing email – that look like well-known websites. How phishing through email works. - Mass Email

A fraudster will start out sending thousands, even millions, of emails to different mail accounts disguised as messages from a well-known company. The typical phishing email will contain a concocted story designed to lure you into taking an action such as clicking a link or button in the email or calling a phone number. Learn how to spot a fraudulent email with Recognizing Phishing. In the email, there will be links or buttons that take you to a fraudulent website. The fraudulent website will also mimic the appearance of a popular website or company. Dearly Beloved, I am blessed writing this letter. I am the pastor of Triumph in christ church. I am married with two children. I age 64 and my wife 58. My occupation is farming. Eight years after giving my life to Christ I had a divine call from God to the ministry here in my village. Initially I resisted but when God started moving and dealing in my life, I obeyed. Ekhoe is a ural village community of about 4,000 inhabitants. it is a typical traditional community. In recent years the village has been greatly stroked by the Aids epidemic which has killed many and made many children orphans. Our fellowship is the only church in this community. It started as a home fellowship in my residence before others were converted and joined. It was a real battle at the time this fellowship started. The elders of the village never wanted it and they did every possible thing to stop it, even tried to take my life to stop the preaching of the gospel. But they failed. The Bible says in Isaiah 59:19, "When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him." And I John 4:4 says, "Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." When we recognize the reality of God word in these chapters the devil is no match for us. Today we have about 500 in our fellowship. The love in our fellowship in another thing that made the elders to relent in their fight against us, even some of them have been converted. Three years ago we started an orphanage home where children without parents and support are cared for. We have 28 children in the home. 15 of these children? parents have died from aids. Our love and support for these orphans is a surprising issue to the elders. It is amazing the way God has met the demand of the orphans and other invalid persons in our midst. The financial statue of the people here are very low due to unemployment. They do farming work not for commercial purposes but fo r life sustaining using manual labor and crude equipment like cutlasses and hoe. Only the government and few wealthy individuals have mechanize farming here. I am writing to request for a K.J.V. study Bible. Either a Thompson Chain Reference Bible or Matthew Henry Study Bible for my use. It is helpful to study and research. I also long to have a Strong Exhaustive Bible Concordance. These items are expensive here. My wife needs a Giant Print Bible due to her reading stress of small letter words. On behalf of our converts we need about 24 giant print Bibles for our members who cannot afford to buy Bibles.and christain books, In our fellowship about 400 people have never had a Bible to read on their own. Used Bibles will also be helpful. In our orphanage home we need items like clothes, shoes, and children toys. Children education items are also necessary. We are also planning to send some of these children at least to primary school when God provides finances. "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life." Jude 20:21. Sincerely, CHURCH MAILLING ADDRESS Pastor Femi Jackson P.O. If you receive this email, nicely correct the person who sent it to you and then just delete it - Steve. The Secret behind the number 11 - Pretty Chilling - (ha ha ha) Read to the bottom. Try it out. I did and I got goose bumps If you are a sceptical person - still read on as it's actually very interesting!! This is actually really freaky!! (Mainly the end part, but read it first) 1) New York City has 11 letters 2) Afghanistan has 11 letters. 3) Ramsin Yuseb has 11 letters. (The terrorist who threatened to destroy the Twin Towers in 1993) 4) George W Bush has 11 letters. This could be a mere coincidence, but this gets interesting: 1) New York is the 11th state. 2) The first plane crashing against the Twin Towers was flight number 11. 3) Flight 11 was carrying 92 passengers. 9 + 2 = 11 4) Flight 77 which also hit Twin Towers, was carrying 65 passengers. 6+5 = 11 5) The tragedy was on September 11, or 9/11 as it is now known. 9 + 1+ 1 =11 6) The date is equal to the US emergency services telephone number 911. (9 + 1 + 1 = 11) Sheer coincidence..?! Read on and make up your own mind: 1) The total number of victims inside all the hi-jacked planes was 254. (2 + 5 + 4 = 11) According to calculations the total victims were probably 257. 2) September 11 is day number 254 of the calendar year. (Again 2 + 5 + 4 = 11.) 3) The Madrid bombing took place on 3/11/2004. 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 4 = 11. 4) The tragedy of Madrid happened 911 days after the Twin Towers incident. Now this is where things get totally eerie: The most recognized symbol for the US, after the Stars & Stripes, is the Eagle. The following verse is taken from the Koran, the Islamic holy book: "For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced: for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah and there was peace." That verse is number 9.11 of the Koran. There is no such statement in 9.11 of the Koran, in fact the eagle is never mentioned in the Koran. It actually says "But (even so), if they repent, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity, they are your brethren in Faith: (thus) do We explain the Signs in detail, for those who understand." - Steve. Unconvinced about all of this Still ..?! Try this and see how you feel afterwards, it made my hair stand on end: Open Microsoft Word and do the following: 1. Type in capitals Q33 NY. This is the flight number of the first plane to hit one of the Twin Towers. 2. Highlight the Q33 NY. 3. Change the font size to 48. 4. Change the actual font to the WINGDINGS 1 Q33 NY There's just one problem: Neither of the airliners involved in the attack on the World Trade Center bore the number "Q33NY." The actual flight numbers were as follows: American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175. It's clear, then, that someone carefully fabricated the sequence of numbers and letters in the email to achieve the desired effect. - Steve. What do you think now?!! Send this to as many people as you know and in 11 minutes you will get a nice surprise, if you don't you will get the shock of your life in 11 min. An artful use of mathematics which has the underlining feature of misinformation, fear and intrigue. Combine it with a few outright lies, and the subtle use of a curse, if I don't respond correctly. And then we're asked to send these lies, confusion and fear to our friends. No thank you. For an interesting aside on 'windings' - click here. (Top)
From Hoax Slayers - http://www.hoax-slayer.com/life-is-beautiful-virus-hoax.htmlThis "warning" claims that a very destructive virus disguised as a Power Point Presentation called "Life is beautiful" is currently being distributed via email. However, there is not, nor has there ever been a virus like the one described in this message.
There are several variants of the hoax, including versions in Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian and several other languages. The message tries to add authority to its claims by mentioning high-profile companies such as Microsoft and AOL. Incidentally, Microsoft does not send out unsolicited virus warnings. Moreover, "Norton" is the name given to a range of security software products sold by Symantec Corp. Thus, information about virus threats is published by "Symantec", not "Norton". In this case, Symantec has published information about the "Life is beautiful" message - but only to denounce it as a hoax. Taken from the Symantec website Please ignore any message regarding this hoax ...... DO NOT pass on. (Top)
Bin-Laden and Olympic Torch Virus Warning Hoax Summary: Message claims that two very destructive viruses are being distributed, one in an email concerning the capture or hanging of Osama Bin-Laden and another in an email with the subject "Invitation".
Status: False Commentary:This "virus warning" combines two earlier email forwards that have circulated widely as completely separate messages. The first part of the message claims that an email about the supposed capture and hanging of Osama Bin Laden contains a dangerous virus that will seriously damage your computer. While the Bin Laden tactic has actually been used in the past to distribute malware, the warning is highly exaggerated and significantly outdated. The second part of the message claims that an email with the subject line "Invitation" carries a virus that can open an "Olympic Torch" that will destroy the hard-drive of the infected computer. However, this claim is totally unfounded. There is not, nor has there ever been, a virus like the one described in the second part of the message. This part of the message is simply a reworking of an even older virus hoax. The message contains false and misleading information and it should not be forwarded. Before forwarding any virus warning email, always take the time to check the veracity of the claims in the message at a reputable anti-virus or anti-hoax website. Sending warning messages about non-existent viruses or messages that distort the truth about real viruses is entirely counterproductive and only adds to the ongoing problems caused by computer security threats. http://www.hoax-slayer.com/ (Top)

Watch out for Scammers, Viruses and other Nasties Scammers attempt to trick you into giving your personal information by making a promise you just can't refuse. It might be a miracle investment, a huge payback, or simply the promise of keeping your bank account open.
Watch out for emails making an offer that sounds too good to be true or asking for personal information. And watch out for spam emails with attachments that may be carrying viruses or other malicious software.
What to look out for
Don't open emails with a suspicious subject line or from an unknown sender. Delete the message immediately without opening it. Don't click on attachments in dubious looking emails, they may contain viruses. Don't reply or click on any links, including 'unsubscribe' links. Spammers often include fake 'unsubscribes' and clicking them only invites more spam. Don't buy spam-advertised products. Many are fraudulent, and buying them only encourages more spam.
Phishing scams
In a phishing attack, you'll receive a fraudulent email from a fake email address. Many will pretend to be from a bank or an online retailer. These emails direct you to a fake website that looks just like the genuine site and is designed to fool you into giving personal details like credit card numbers, account details and passwords. Don't respond to emails asking for confidential information, account details and passwords. Financial institutions will never contact you via email for personal information. Don't click on email links. You should only visit a bank or shopping website directly by typing the website address into your internet browser or by using your Favourites list or Bookmarks.

Stay Safe While Shopping Online By Martin H. Bosworth - ConsumerAffairs.Com - November 16, 2006 Each year, the holiday shopping blitz starts earlier and earlier, and the potential for identity theft and fraud increases along with it. As more and more shoppers forgo long lines and bad service for the convenience of shopping online, there are more fraudsters, thieves, and hijackers lying in wait to make off with your personal data. More than 100 million Americans -- as many as one in ten -- are expected to do their holiday shopping via the Web this season. Last year, online shoppers spent a whopping $10 billion in holiday purchases, and with that much money at stake, experts warn that of a rapidly rising risk of being "phished" for your personal information, having your shopping habits recorded via keyloggers, or simply being buried in spam. "Identity thieves don't take a holiday," warns the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center. "Because of the distractions of the holidays conditions are ripe for identity thieves and pickpockets to take advantage of the situation." What To Watch Out ForWhat kind of pitfalls can shoppers expect while bargain-hunting online this year? Here are some of the major problems to avoid:
• Spam Offers for Viagra and scams from Nigeria are clogging e-mail inboxes like never before, and the holiday season promises even more of the same. Antispam security firm MessageLabs reported that the level of "spam traffic" messages from "bad sources" topped 72 percent, or one in every 1.37 e-mails.
MessageLabs credited the spike to new techniques used by spammers to evade Internet providers' filters, and increased use of "zombie" PCs -- armies of PCs linked together to mass-mail spam by the truckload.
• Phishing Although the bulk of spam is annoying at worst, among the tides of spam are e-mails designed to trick readers into submitting their financial information through posing as legitimate institutions like PayPal or Bank of America.
Phishing e-mails entice readers to visit dummy Web sites and provide data such as credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, and so on, which fraudsters conveniently harvest for their own uses.
• Keyloggers Even nastier than phisher e-mails are "Trojan" virus programs that look like normal e-mails or downloads, but when opened, remotely record the patterns of keyboard usage and send the information to outside sources. Fraudsters use keyloggers to capture Web surfers' passwords, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, and so on.
Security researchers have recently been tracking a Trojan keylogger that masks itself as an update to Adobe's Acrobat Reader utility. When downloaded, the keylogger not only records the user's typing patterns, but also turns it into a "zombie" that automatically sends out mass spam emails to unwitting recipients.
• Voice phishing A dangerous new tactic employed by fraudsters is voice phishing or "vishing." Vishing involves calling an unsuspecting cardholder and pretending to be a representative of the bank or card issuer, claiming that there's been fraud on the cardholder's account.
Gary Morse, president of Razorpoint Security technology, says that the fraudsters prey on the card holder's anxiety to get their card security code, mother's maiden name, and billing address "everything a scammer needs to create another card, and [usurp] that person's identity." What You Can DoSo, with all this to watch out for, is it even worth it to log on and take the risk? The answer is "Yes" -- if you're smart. There's risk in everything in life, and employing some basic techniques will keep your data safe while you enjoy the convenience of shopping online. These include:
• Know where you're shopping Most online surfers will stick to known brick-and-mortar establishments they're familiar with, such as Wal-Mart and Barnes & Noble, or established Internet merchants like Amazon and eBay. If you have any doubt that the site you're visiting is legitimate, don't shop there.
Use the Web to research online stores for reviews, advice, or scam warnings before committing to a purchase with any unfamiliar vendor.
• Delete all unsolicited email Don't open any e-mails, instant messages, or other communications from unknown senders. Don't click on any links to Web sites in unsolicited mail. If you don't know who it is or where it's from, better to be safe than sorry.
• Make sure the Web site is secure Any online shopping site should have a secure page for inputting credit card information and personal data. Check the page for a "lock" icon in your Web browser's address bar. The address bar should also be yellow instead of white, and the page address should begin as "https://" rather than "http://." • Use multiple passwords Don't use anything immediately obvious, like your last name, your date of birth, or your mother's maiden name. Gary Morse recommends using such tactics as easily memorizable patterns, and creating passwords that incorporate parts of the name of the site you're visiting, such as "amz" for Amazon.com.
"Using passwords with keyboard patterns helps users remember strong passwords without writing them down," he says.
• Never hand out sensitive personal information online Use a separate or throwaway e-mail address for online commerce. Only give out the absolute minimum necessary information for any purchase. Never provide your Social Security number for any online purchase.
If you're prompted for the three-digit "security" code on the back of your credit or debit card, make sure to verify this is needed first.
• Use credit cards for online shopping Credit cards limit your liability for fraudulent transactions to $50 under federal law, and virtually all banks that issue cards will reverse unknown charges instantly.
Debit cards do not enjoy the same kind of protection, and if you discover fraud and don't report it quickly enough, you can be held liable for the losses from your checking account.
• Keep your computer protections up-to-date Don't even think about going online to shop without having a personal firewall set up on your machine, as well as up-to-date antivirus software and antispyware scanners that sweep your system for unwanted intruders. 1. When you send email to many contacts, put all e-mail addresses in the bcc (blind carbon copy) box. (None of the recipients will know who the other recipients were.) 2. If you do have to forward email, delete all names and e-mail addresses from the message before sending it. Respect others' privacy. 3. Never send a mail asking the recipient to forward it to everyone he/she knows. (Chain mail accumulates many e-mail addresses over time & spammers thank the Lord when they receive one.) If it is a great email, at least delete the section about passing it on. 4. Never send virus warnings to anyone. (It may be a hoax and your contacts may end up damaging their machine or losing useful data. Making regular updates to the OS, firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware and other software is enough.) 5. Check out suspect emails by doing a "Google" search, putting the word hoax and the name or subject of the email in the search box. 6. Never use another person's e-mail address without his/her permission on any website. (Spammers harvest e-mail addresses by providing some free service.) (Top)
